The scene depicted by the artist shows the Congress of Gniezno. At the table, seated side by side
are emperor Otto III and Polish duke Boleslaus Chrobry.
The Congress of Gniezno was held in the year 1000; it was a very important event which was to
strengthen Poland's position and raise its status in Europe. The ecclesiastical province in Gniezno
was established and emperor Otto III placed his imperial tiara on Boleslaus Chrobry's head, thus
symbolically crowning him the king of Poland, confirming Poland's independence.
Inscription in French states: "This text is an exact translation of the original Latin text done in
Paris in February 1928."
