Accompanying the text, the artist placed the portrait of Berek Joselewicz and a scene of the
Jewish unit engaged in a battle in 1794 in the Warsaw district of Praga during the Kosciuszko
insurrection. The shield with an eagle and letters RP, supported by two lions (the symbol of the
Jewish nation) bears a Polish inscription: "For freedom yours and ours".
Note in French: "This text is an exact translation of the Latin original, done in Paris in November
1927. The heroic defense of Praga, the suburb of Warsaw, by a Jewish regiment of Berek
Joselewicz, on 7 November 1794. In memory of my Polish brothers in faith who died for their
country, I dedicate this painting, Artur Szyk, 1928."
From the collection of the Józef Piłsudski Library (WiMBP) in Łódź.
