The Statute of Kalisz was dedicated to Marshal Józef Piłsudski,
whom the artist considered an enemy of all nationalisms and the
continuator of the idea of tolerance started in 1264 by Duke
Boleslaus. This is why it is to him that he dedicated the first page
of his work praising Poland. On the page, Szyk placed intricately
decorated initials of the Polish Marshall – JP. In the center, there
is the Polish white eagle with two crowns. There are also other
elements- Polish soldiers in uniforms, including a legionnaire in a
characteristic cap ('maciejówka'), a peasant holding a scythe
ready to attack and a shield with the Polish emblem, as well as a
Arcadian rural scene: a woman feeding a baby and a man sowing
corn. A field and houses are visible in the distance. It seems that
the Polish soldier is looking after the Polish family's safety.
