STATUTE OF KALISZ 5 52 FIGURE 3 3 3. THE TITLE PAGE IN LATIN
The figure contains richly ornamented Latin text,
detailing the rights granted to Jews by Duke
Boleslaus in 1264, later confirmed by King Casimir
the Great in 1334 and by Casimir Jagiellon the
Fourth in 1447 and 1467. The artist made one of the
very few mistakes – as the law-giver, he quotes
Boleslaus the Tall who ruled in a differed period.
Artur Szyk also painted a miniature featuring the
scene of granting the rights to Jews, figures of
monarchs, Polish and Jewish citizens as well as the
emblems of Poland, Lithuania and Russia (eagle,
Pogoń and archangel).
From the collection of the Józef Piłsudski Library
(WiMBP) in Łódź.
Initial P – Poloniae
