The following pages present reproductions of all
the pages of the Statute of Kalisz by Artur Szyk. 37 of
these are engravings from the collection of the Józef
Piłsudski Public Library, while the other eight have
been reproduced on the basis of Mr. Marek
Szukalak's collection.

Artur Szyk's works are done using
the heliogravure technique, which
consists in photographic
transposition of an image onto
a metal plate (usually copper)
and etching it with photosensitive
emulsion so that the lightest
spots make the shallowest
indentations. Heliogravure was
popular in 19th century, only to
be replaced by rotogravure.
Nowadays, it is rarely employed –
only for reproducing artworks
when a high-quality copy
is needed.
