On 5 August 1969, the Skotnickis left for Rome, but their final destination
was California. It turned out, however, that a new heart surgery ward was
being created in the Netherlands and they were looking for someone to
work. Stefan also received a job at the surgery ward at the University of
Nijmegen. The possibility of easier contacts with parents took precedence.
Very quickly, the family managed to acclimatize despite the new language
and unknown culture.
In 1979, Skotnicki was appointed a professor in the field of cardiovascular
surgery. In addition to his professional activity, he was active in various social
initiatives, in the years 1981-1982, he was a co-founder of the Medical Bank
for Aid for Poland. In 2000, he retired and received the Golden Cross of Merit
awarded by the President of the Republic of Poland.
Ewa and Piotr completed studies in the Netherlands, started their families,
and became parents for their children. Poland is a country of birth for them.
