            cause - as I have already mentioned - I never knew Yiddish.
                 One day, my Mom and I found ourselves on the other side of
            Limanowskiego St., which happened very rarely. It was most likely
            related to a visit to the doctor who lived at Rybna St. (Fischstrasse).
            After leaving her, we were herded by the Germans and Jewish po-
            licemen to Bazarowy Square (Basarplatz), where the gallows were
            standing. Immediately afterwards,  three men were brought in a
            truck and we were forced to watch their execution. During the five
            years of the war I saw many dead bodies, both in the ghetto and in
            camps, or while  being  moved  between them, but these hanged
            men, still alive a moment before, stuck in my memory the most
            and appeared in my nightmares for many years.




                                              Shadows of the Past





                 It is understandable that as a child I did not know many peo-
            ple, let alone their names, especially since I would never meet these
            people again in the future.

                 My parents often sent me to Mr. Ajzen, who was the caretaker
            of the house at 45 or 47 Limanowskiego St., why - I cannot recall.
            He was a very nice man, an Orthodox Jew, whom I usually found
            at prayer, always in full liturgical attire. Then I stopped going to
            him, not knowing why. Now I know.
                 Another person who briefly came through my life and disap-
            peared just as quickly was a boy with pretty blonde hair, his last
            name was Lam (I do not remember his first name), who worked
