Polish inscription
on a Torah scroll
The artist goes back to the time
of the Jagiellons.
He depicts the colourful royal
court of Sigismund Augustus
–
(1520–1572) and Jewish
physicians in oriental clothes
who came to Krakow in order to
save the life of dying Barbara
–
Radziwił (1520–1551).
At the bottom of the page –
inscription in French and in
Latin, describing the event.
At the top – inscription in Polish
placed on a Torah scroll,
supported by lions:
"Jewish doctors, sent to Sigismund
Augustus, King of Poland, from
his friend Jospeph Nassi, Duke of
Naxos and Cyclades, the Grand
Vizier of the Sultan Suleiman the
Magnificent, in order to treat
Barbara Radziwiłł."
In the right upper corner - Polish
eagle and Lithuanian Pahonia.
Numerous intricate ornamental
elements. Beautiful bordure
around the work.
