Józef Buchman (born in 1930) was born in Łódź, where he lived with his
parents and four sisters in Zgierska Street near Bałuty Marketplace. After the
creation of the ghetto, the Buchmann family stayed in their apartment, which
was located in the “closed district” area. Józef worked with his sisters in the
ghetto at waste disposal. In 1942, his father died. In August 1944, the family
was deported to Auschwitz, from where Józef was transported to Bergen-Belsen,
where he lived to see liberation.
After the war, he returned to Łódź for a while, and then he went to Frankfurt,
from where he wanted to emigrate to America. However, he remained in
Germany, where he successfully ran his own business and became involved in
philanthropy. Since the 1980s, he has come to Łódź many times, supported
the Łódź Jewish Community, renovation of the cemetery and commemorated
the victims of the Łódź ghetto, including the construction of a memorial at
Radegast Station and the monument to commemorate Poles who saved Jews.
