Josef (Pepek) Salomonović (born in 1938) was born in Ostrava,
Czechoslovakia, from where he was forced to move with his parents, Erich
and Dora, and his older brother, Michał, to Prague in 1939. At the beginning
of the deportation of Jews from the Reich and the Protectorate to Eastern
Europe, Josef with his brother and parents were deported in October 1941
to the Łódź ghetto, where they lived in Wolborska Street. His father and elder
brother worked in a metal department, where small Josef was also engaged.
In 1944, the entire family were deported to Auschwitz, and then to Stutthof,
where Erich was murdered. The rest of the Salomonovic family were trans-
ported to Dresden, where they worked in the armaments factory which was
the sub-camp of KL Flossenburg. After the massive bombardment of Dresden,
Dora and her sons found themselves among a group of inmates evacuated to
Zwodau, who were to be transferred to the camp in Pirna. During the death
march, all three of them escaped and saved their lives. Pepek returned to
Czechoslovakia, where he completed engineering studies. He then left for
Vienna in 1971, where he lives to this day.
