At the beginning of December 1941, the construction of the first extermina-
tion camp in Chełmno on the River Ner was completed. Already by January
1942, the German authorities commanded the Eldest of the Jews to direct
the first groups of people to prepare for deportation. Rumkowski, based on
his policy of maximum productivisation, recognized that non-working people
who shirk work and criminals should be sent from the ghetto first. Contrary to
declarations of the Germans, the resettlement was not limited to ten thousand
people in January, but lasted until mid-1942. By the end of July 1942, over
fifty-five thousand inhabitants of the Łódź, “closed district” had been murde-
red in Chełmno on the River Ner. In the photos: a group of displaced persons
