On 8 May, the Germans surrounded the bunker in the
house at 18, Miła Street, where the headquarters of the
Jewish Combat Organization and the command centre
were located. The five entrances were blocked and gas
was pumped in. Arie Wilner summoned the combatants to
commit suicide so as not to be caught alive. Most members
of the JCO, including Mordechaj Anielewicz, died in the
bunker. A small group of them realized that one of the
entrances had not been discovered and manned, and so
they managed to survive.
