Izrael Chaim Wilner – Arie ‘Jurek’
(1917-1943)

‘Jurek Wilner was the favourite of the mother superior –
blonde, with blue eyes, he reminded her of her brother in
captivity. (...) – and when he was going away to Warsaw, to
the ghetto, which he was never to leave, he left her his most
precious possession: a notebook with poems. (…) [On 8 May,
in a bunker at 18, Miła Street] Jurek Wilner shouted: “Let’s
die together!”, Lutek Rotblat shot his mother and sister, later
everyone started shooting, and when we got through to
there, we found a few alive - eighty of them had committed
suicide’.
