‘When you look at evil and turn your head
away, or you don’t help when you can, you
become complicit. Because by turning
your head away you help those who
commit that evil. And there were dozens
of such cases. It’s much easier and nicer
to go to a café and savour a piece of cake
than watch people being shot’.
Marek
Edelman
Marek Edelman had no doubts: humans are evil, capable of
horrible things and that is why one has to work incessantly
to counteract evil. He considered indifference the worst
omission. His whole life was a fight against discrimination,
hatred and racism. He defended those in need. Utilising
regained freedom of speech, he spoke on behalf of the
vulnerable and disadvantaged, he reacted to the evil
happening in the world, was involved in the building of civil
society and humanitarian actions in and outside Poland.
