Marek Edelman spent the last two years of his life living
in Warsaw with his long-time friends, Paula and Mirosław
Sawicki. He died on 2 October 2009. The funeral was
conducted according to military ceremony protocol, and
the coffin was covered with the Bund flag. Over 2,000
people – politicians, diplomats, artists – participated in the
ceremony together with Edelman’s closest relatives. Tadeusz
Mazowiecki, Adam Michnik and Aleksander Smolar spoke
during the mourning ceremony at the Monument to the
Ghetto Heroes; the funeral speech was delivered by Jacek
Bocheński. Marek Edelman was buried at the Jewish
Cemetery at Okopowa Street, next to his friends from Bund,
in the place he had chosen himself.
