In the 1990s, he brought children from war-torn
Yugoslavia to Poland for medical treatment. He travelled
with humanitarian aid convoys, wrote open letters to
governments, including an appeal to Presidents Bill Clinton
and Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Tony Blair and the
NATO leaders. He protested against the murders and ethnic
cleansing in Rwanda and Zair, against the discrimination
of ethnic groups in the Republic of South Africa and in
Israel, but also against acts of violence against the Roma
in Poland and Czech Republic. He wrote to the Russian
government on the Chechnya issue, addressed human
rights organizations in defense of people sentenced to
draconian punishments in Cuba. He became a member
of an international committee for supporting the women’s
movement against wars, which grants the Anna Politkowska
Award to female human right defenders. In Łódź, he
contributed to the establishment of the Food Bank [Bank
Żywności] which still operates and bears his name.

As a result of mass resettlements, about 850,000 refugees from Kosovo were
seeking shelter mainly in Albania and Macedonia. The people who remained
in Kosovo were subjected to repressions; civilians were murdered and ethnic
cleansing actions were carried out. 15,000 people died. 1998. Agencja Gazeta
