Shielding the Flame [Zdążyć przez Panem Bogiem], a book
by Hanna Krall, a reportage and book writer, was published
in 1977 and made Marek Edelman’s voice audible more than
thirty years after the ghetto uprising. No one had spoken
about the ghetto that way before. And there was no one else
that Marek Edelman had talked to about the ghetto since
his first book published soon after the war. In the story, the
ghetto and the uprising intermingled with tales of his first
and therefore the most important patients: Mr Rudny, Mrs
Bubner and Mr Rzewuski. Both timelines were connected by
Marek Edelman’s race with God, where the award was each
person’s life.
