refugees from Poland.
In the 1930s, Artur Szyk had already recognized the
threat associated with the growing power of Nazi
Germany. He cautioned against Hitler, whose cruelty he ,
sensed. Since the beginning of the war, he devoted his
talent entirely to the fight against the German aggression,
lashing with his satire also at all the supporters of the
Third Reich: Hirohito, Mussolini, Stalin ... Szyk's war
caricatures entered into the world canon.
"They are neither exaggerated, nor too extravagant,
all characterized by cool anger that Szyk achieved
through crisp lines and bright colors" – wrote
"Collier's" on April 13, 1940. This title along with
other American newspapers, magazines and weeklies,
including "Time", "Saturday Review", "Chicago Sun",
"New York Post", "American Mercury", "Esquire" and
many others, featured works by Szyk on their covers.
His cartoons were very popular, all of America knew
them. The artist exhibited them in numerous galleries
and museums. Szyk's fame reached Europe and even
Hitler. American newspapers wrote that the Führer
Lebensraum (Living Space), London 1939, offered a financial reward for the head of the artist
Adolf Hitler and Stalin divided Europe
who ridiculed him.
"How can anyone expect me
to paint idyllic, tranquil landsca−
pes or a blissful still life, when
the world is on fire..."
