From the beginning of the war,
the artist depicted in his work the
suffering of the Jewish people. His
mother Eugenia Szyk and brother
Bernard were still in Poland, and in
1940 they had to move from the
Śródmiejska street into the Łódź
ghetto in the Bałuty district. In Sep−
tember 1942, Eugenia was deported
by Germans to Chełmno on the
Ner, where she was murdered. The
last information about Bernard is da−
ted on 28th December 1942. In do−
cuments, it is recorded that on that
day he was removed from the regi−
ster of inhabitants of the apartment
at Metrossengasse 77 (Dworska Stre−
et, today Organizacji WiN), which
was tantamount to his deportation
and likely death.
