I ILLUSTRATOR
In 1921, Szyk was invited to Paris by
August Decour, art merchant and art
gallery owner. Thanks to his patronage
but, first and foremost, thanks to his own
hard work and talent, he became one of
the most esteemed illustrators. He was the
author of beautiful illustrations for The
Book of Esther and Song of Songs, The
Temptation of St. Anthony by Gustave
Flaubert and Jacob's Well by Pierre Benoit.
His satirical drawings adorned the album
Le Juif qui rit (A Laughing Jew).
The Szyk family lived in a house
owned by Auguste Decour in Rolleboise
near Paris, then in a Paris villa at the
Montsouris Park, where the illuminated
works were created.
Invited by France's Minister of
Education and Fine Arts, Anatole de
Monzie, the Szyk family went to
Morocco, where the artist painted the
portrait of the pasha of Marrakesh Portrait of the pasha of Marrakesh
Tihami al−Glawi (1870−1958). They spent Tihami al-Glawi , Morocco, 1920s
several months there.
