Artur Szyk was interested in the medium of caricature
from an early age. In 1912, he co−founded a Łódź weekly
"Śmiech" [Laughter]− he was its first artistic director and
author of the characteristic vignette, as well as an author
frequently featured on its pages.
During the interwar period, Artur Szyk's drawings were
published by various magazines and newspapers, such as
"Harap", "Kurier Świąteczny", "Mucha", "Republika",
"Ekspres Ilustrowany". The artist presented his satirical
works and social commentaries in numerous exhibitions, such
as at the Grand Hotel and the Casino theatre (now the
Polonia cinema). Szyk was also the author of a cycle of satirical
drawings depicting tax officials in Łódź. After a long hiatus, he
returned to drawing cartoons during World War Two.
"Szyk's caricatures are a great current revue of the life of
Łódź, this strange, feverish thing that no other city has."
