was standing next to it. Of course, inside the room, not outside, as
there it would not last even a few minutes. On the door, from the
corridor side, there was an inscription left by the previous tenants,
K + M + B. It survived until our deportation from the ghetto.

Our room had one window, which overlooked the yard with
storage sheds, behind them you could see the tannery (5/7
Urzednicza St.). There was a small brick building adjacent to our
house, which housed an upholstery workshop. After dusk, the win-
dow had to be carefully covered, as any visible light could result in
the most serious consequences. Once the window in our room had
                                                                        50
not been properly covered. Dad was summoned to the Kripo
headquarters, located in the parish building at the back of the
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, from which
there was usually no return. Dad, however, returned home, though
badly beaten. We were overjoyed because he could have ended up
being arrested, and that would have been the fastest way to get
deported from the ghetto (this is euphemistically how the way to
            extermination was called!).
The house could be left from the yard only. The inhabitants
of the ghetto side of Urzednicza St. were afraid to leave the house
through the front, i.e. go out onto the sidewalk between the house
and the wires, because any wachman guarding the wires could
                                                51
            shoot from the closest distance.
On the same floor, on the other side of the staircase, lived the
already mentioned friends of my Parents, the Weltfrajds. I cannot
say whether they moved in there with us, or rather after some time,
probably with my Dad's assistance. Our apartments were num-
bered 49 and 51 but I am unable to recall which one belonged to
us. The most important thing for me was that Jurek and I were
            close again.
