I think we were among the first, and who knows if not the
very first inhabitants to enter the area of the future Lodz ghetto,
which was officially established in February 1940.

I do not know how Dad arranged for this apartment, maybe
he exchanged it for ours. The term "apartment" should not be un-
derstood in the normal sense of the word. It was one small room
on the second floor, in the house outbuilding. This room was also
            a bedroom, a dining room, a kitchen and unfortunately… a toilet.
Yes, at night you had to take care of your physiological needs in
a bucket (I suppose I had my own potty), and in the morning the
waste was taken to the toilet in the yard, or poured out into a sink

The room was furnished with only a half of my parents' dou-
ble bed, a large wardrobe, my small iron bed, a round table, several
chairs - all transported from our previous apartment. There was
also a fireclay stove and a small barrel in which we kept sauerkraut
when it was possible to get it. It stuck in my mind that our room

began to seep through the floor. On September 14 , 1943 at 2.30 pm the fire brigade

did not belong to the ghetto.
