With the changing situation on the fronts, the existence of such a large con-
centration of Jews lost its raison d'être. Economic factors and their production
value were no longer decisive – political considerations were more important.
On 15 June 1944, when there were still about seventy-five thousand people
in the ghetto, Heinrich Himmler ordered its liquidation. From 23 June to 14
July 1944, over seven thousand, one hundred people were deported from the
ghetto and murdered in the camp in Chełmno on the River Ner. On 15 July,
the deportations were suspended for a short time, and after their resumption,
transports were no longer directed to Chełmno on the River Ner, but to the
Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. From 5 to 25 August 1944, almost all of those who
remained in the ghetto, including the Chief Elder of the Jews, were deported.
The vast majority were murdered in the gas chambers immediately after they
had been brought to the camp. In the illustration: announcement No. 429,
a summons to report to assembly points and prohibiting staying outside these
points under penalty of death.
