In the spring of 1945, before the capitulation of Germany,
they both came to Łódź. At first they lived in her parents’
apartment in Przejazd (now Tuwima) Street, later moving
to her aunt’s house at 34a Mostowa (now Aleksandra
Zelwerowicza) Street. They both started medical studies.
In 1950 got married. They had two children: Aleksander,
born in 1951, today a biophysicist working on a cure for
cystic fibrosis and a film director; and Anna, born in 1956.
Alina Margolis (1922-2008) was born in Łódź. Before
the war she attended the grammar school for girls in
Piramowicza Street. After the escape from Łódź to Warsaw,
she was studied at the Jewish Nursing School established
by Luba Bielicka-Blum. She left the ghetto after the January
action in 1943; served as a nurse during the Warsaw
Uprising (many years later, she was decorated with the
Cross of Valour). After the war, Alina started medical
studies and worked as a pediatrician. In 1959, she obtained
a PhD degree.
