This is a symbolic date – in August 1944 the last residents of the closed district were taken by the Nazi occupiers from the Łódź ghetto to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The ghetto was then liquidated. Łódź, which was a very important centre of Jewish culture, science and trade before the war, remembers about its residents and about thousands of Jews from nearby towns and from many European cities who lost their life here or were taken to extermination camps.
