During the so-called ‘Great Action’, Marek Edelman risked his
life by going to Umschlagplatz and rescuing people, mainly those
connected with Bund and their families, as they were necessary
to the resistance movement. In the course of six weeks,
he witnessed 400,000 people being led to Umschlagplatz to
meet their death. That image remained forever in his memory.
At the end of the Great Action the German authorities issued
35 thousand ‘life coupons’ (a card that confirmed that the
holder was necessary in the ghetto) thus forcing the ghetto
inmates to make dramatic decisions.
